STUDIO 531 were engaged by School District No. 68 (Nanaimo-Ladysmith Public Schools) to convert existing, back-to-back, six fixture, male and female washrooms into a single, gender-inclusive washroom. The new washroom consists of four standard toilet rooms, one barrier-free room with a private sink and two combination rooms with both toilets and urinals. The design intent was to create a washroom that is inclusive for everybody, that is safe, accessible, and highly durable. A large opening from the hallway frames the entrance and a central wash station accessible by all. For providing security through design, the central space maintains open sightlines, while the private stalls are fully enclosed with robust locks. The details address reducing sound transmittance from the stalls and from the washroom to nearby classrooms. Student and staff engagement informed the design, to tend to a variety of current issues faced today in schools.
