Civic + Institutional
Constructed in 1939, the Russian Hall has been an institution in the neighbourhood of Strathcona for almost 80 years. As one of the last remaining affordable multi-room venues for artists, musicians, instructors, and various community groups, the Hall is adamant about remaining so, despite undergoing a substantial update and renovation. The design is a negotiation between the existing structure, a range of desires and of course, a budget. The goal is to open up what essentially has become a concrete bunker, and to allow it to serve a new generation of patrons.
