In the spirit of the season, we’d like to highlight the work of an important local organization:  The Shelbourne Community Kitchen is a neighbourhood food center in Saanich. With two staff, a hard-working board of directors, and an incredible team of volunteers, The Kitchen works to lower barriers to healthy food for over 850 low income families and individuals in our community.

For the past 2 years Studio 531 been assisting the Kitchen renovate and relocate to a new, larger facility, that just opened.  The photo shows some key members of the project team striking some funky moves at the November Grand Opening.   From Left to right:  Geoff and Craig from Banyan Construction; Kim and Odesssa from the SC Kitchen; and Jesse from Studio 531.

The Kitchen is a small registered charity with a great big heart. Their goal is to provide fresh, dignified food support and programs that bring good people together with good food. People who are living on low income come to the Kitchen to:

  • Prepare and share healthy meals together in our many cooking programs;
  • Access nutritious food through our Pantry program;
  • Work together to grow food and build skills in our gardens;
  • And connect with other community resources while becoming resources for one another.

Visit the Shelbourne Community Kitchen’s website to learn more about their incredible programs. If you would like to learn about how you can contribution to Phase 2 renovations, please contact their Program Director, Kim Cummins, at info@shelbournecommunitykitchen.ca

** Very important:  Although the kitchen is open as a food distribution centre, Phase 2, the construction of a commercial kitchen is planned for 2022 pending additional fundraising. Please donate, and if you do so before Dec 31, there is matching program up to $25,000 in place.  You can donate through Canada Helps by visiting their website.
